Forward deployed AI companies in 2026
Who offers forward deployed AI engineers in 2026: model labs, cloud and software vendors, platform companies and consultancies. A sourced map, checked 11 October 2026.
Forward deployed engineering went from one company’s way of working to the way much of the AI industry sells deployment. In 2026 alone, OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS and Microsoft each launched a forward deployed business, and large consultancies built practices around the term. This map groups the companies that offer forward deployed AI engineers by what their engineers actually deploy, because that decides what you are left with when they leave.
Every claim about another company links to its own announcement or to press coverage. Last checked on 11 October 2026. Ortelian wrote this page and is one of the companies on it.
The map at a glance
| Group | Companies | What their engineers deploy | Worth a look if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model labs and their deployment companies | OpenAI Deployment Company, Ode with Anthropic, Anthropic Applied AI | Systems built on that lab’s models | You have standardised on one model provider |
| Cloud and software vendors | AWS Forward Deployed Engineering, Microsoft Frontier Company, Salesforce | AI built on that vendor’s cloud or platform | You are committed to that vendor’s stack |
| Platform plus forward deployed team | Palantir, Distyl AI, Ortelian | The company’s own platform, set up for each customer | You want a platform and a team that stays after launch |
| Consultancies and systems integrators | Accenture with Microsoft, plus Microsoft’s other FDE partners | Partner platforms, with change management at scale | You are running a large programme across many teams |
| Applied AI boutiques | Tomoro and Fractional AI, both now part of lab ventures | Custom AI systems | You want a small senior team for one hard problem |
Model labs and their deployment companies
OpenAI Deployment Company
OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company on 11 May 2026. It is majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI, launched with more than $4 billion of initial investment, and agreed to acquire the applied AI firm Tomoro, which brings about 150 forward deployed engineers and deployment specialists. OpenAI describes an engagement as a focused diagnostic, then a small number of priority workflows, built inside the organisation and connected to the customer’s data, tools and controls.
Ode with Anthropic
Anthropic, Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman introduced Ode with Anthropic on 15 July 2026 as a standalone AI services company that pairs Anthropic’s models with a team of AI engineers. TechCrunch reports that Ode is built on Fractional AI, an applied AI boutique the venture acquired, that it works “Claude-first” but can use other providers, and that Anthropic’s own applied AI team keeps doing strategic deployments.
Anthropic Applied AI
Anthropic also hires its own forward deployed engineers in its Applied AI team. Its job posting describes engineers who embed with strategic customers to ship applications on Claude models.
Cloud and software vendors
AWS Forward Deployed Engineering
AWS announced a Forward Deployed Engineering organization backed by $1 billion on 30 June 2026. AWS says it will embed thousands of engineers with customers and design each deployment so the customer is self-sufficient when it ends, with the systems running in the customer’s own AWS account. CNBC reports that engineers go in as pods of roughly five or six.
Microsoft Frontier Company
Microsoft launched Microsoft Frontier Company on 2 July 2026 with a $2.5 billion investment and 6,000 industry and engineering experts embedded at customers. Microsoft says customers can choose models from several providers on its platform, and names forward deployed partnerships with Accenture, Capgemini, EY, KPMG and PwC.
Salesforce
Salesforce is hiring forward deployed engineers for Agentforce who build agentic solutions inside customer environments, working in pods alongside a deployment strategist.
Platform plus forward deployed team
Palantir
Palantir’s job description says it pioneered the position, and its forward deployed engineers build custom applications and LLM workflows on Palantir’s software for each customer.
Distyl AI
Distyl AI pairs a platform for enterprise AI delivery with a forward deployed engineer model that puts engineers on site to own the outcome with the customer. It announced a partnership with Google Cloud on 22 April 2026.
Ortelian
Ortelian is a platform plus a forward deployed team for complex companies in Europe and the US. The core idea is to get the most impact from AI in the business, so the team works on site to redesign the work before agents take it over. We work on site not because our product needs it, but because your company does. After launch, the client’s team runs it or we keep running it. Either way, Ortelian hosts and operates the platform, in the EU, and inside an engagement the client’s own agents can use it through scoped tools. Ortelian works across model providers. The company is Ortelian, Inc. More on how we work.
Consultancies and systems integrators
Accenture launched a forward deployed engineering practice with Microsoft on 18 March 2026, bringing together thousands of engineers, with Microsoft providing the platform and Accenture leading process redesign and change management. TechCrunch notes that Deloitte has built its own forward deployed team as well. If you are weighing a consultancy against a smaller team, see Ortelian vs AI consultancies.
Applied AI boutiques are being bought
Two applied AI boutiques now sit inside lab ventures: OpenAI agreed to acquire Tomoro for the OpenAI Deployment Company, and Fractional AI became the base of Ode. For buyers who want a small, senior team, that makes it more important to ask whose models the team will build on.
How to choose
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Whose models and platform will they build on? | Lab and vendor teams build on their own stack. That is fine if you have chosen it already. |
| What runs after they leave? | Some aim to leave you self-sufficient, some keep operating it. Know which before you start. |
| Who hosts it, and where? | Hosting region and who operates the platform matter for data protection rules such as the GDPR. |
| How is “done” defined? | A standard agreed on real examples before the build makes the result measurable. |
| How big is the team you’ll get? | Large firms send pods into large programmes. Mid-size companies often need a few senior people for longer. |

Questions people ask
Which companies offer forward deployed AI engineers?
As of October 2026: model labs (the OpenAI Deployment Company, Ode with Anthropic and Anthropic’s Applied AI team), cloud and software vendors (AWS, Microsoft Frontier Company, Salesforce), platform companies with forward deployed teams (Palantir, Distyl AI, Ortelian) and large consultancies such as Accenture.
Who invented forward deployed engineering?
Palantir says it pioneered the role, embedding engineers with customers to build on its software. The term spread across AI companies, most visibly in 2026.
Is there a forward deployed option hosted in the EU?
Ortelian’s platform is hosted in the EU and its team works on site with companies in Europe and the US. For the others, ask each provider where the systems they build will run.
Is a forward deployed team the same as a consultancy?
Not usually. A consultancy recommends and a forward deployed team builds and stays. The line blurs when consultancies run forward deployed practices. See forward deployed engineer vs consultant.
